The Andrew Shaw Memorial Trust owns and operates the Boy Scout Cabin in Darien, CT. Founded in 1926, the Trust’s first scout cabin on a wooded lot on West Avenue lasted until 1998 when after years of flooding caused serious structural damage, it was decided to replace the original cabin with a new more modern structure. Now, after 15 years of hard use and a growing local scouting program, the Trust is looking to increase the functionality, update the facility for the coming years and recapture some of the woodsy charm of the original structure.

CHA has designed the interior and exterior renovations to address these needs. The proposed changes reclad the current structure in natural cedar, replace the roofing, incorporate a solar voltaic system for electricity, and windows and doors to increase natural daylight and upgrade the finishes in the main meeting room, Scribner Hall.

Charles Hilton serves as a member of the Andrew Shaw Memorial Trust Board of Directors. More information about the Andrew Shaw Memorial Trust and the Darien, CT Scouting Program can be found at www.darienscouts.org.

“I have worked on projects with Chuck Hilton for over 25 years on a regular basis. It is always a pleasure to work with Chuck and the Architects in his firm. Their strong attention to detail and strong commitment to achieve the highest quality finished product for their clients are the firms most important assets.”

. . . . .

“As an Architectural Lighting Designer for nearly 30 years, I have had the opportunity to work with many world-known architects and Chuck's (Charles Hilton's) name should be included in that list. His work is elegant and refined. Even the most challenging restraints result in beautifully proportioned and workable designs. His steadfast drive for excellence and realizing his client's dreams is accomplished through highly detailed construction documents (every room elevated, and every detail described) and attention to detail. But Chuck can also think fast, resolving design problems with a quick pencil sketch in the field or at the conference table. He is an excellent leader and has a seemingly endless knowledge of all things architectural. I consider myself fortunate to have worked with Chuck on so many beautiful projects and I feel that working with him has made me a better designer.”
