- ROTARY CENTENNIAL PAVILION -

Description

Rotary International is an International Service organization whose purpose is to bring business and professional leaders together to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to help build good will and peace in the world. Founded in 1905, Rotary International celebrated its centennial in 2005. In recognition of this milestone, each of the nearly 35,000 clubs around the world was asked to contribute a significant project to benefit their local communities.

The Greenwich Rotary Club under the leadership of former club president Charles Hilton designed and helped fund and build this beautiful “Rotary Centennial Pavilion” sitting high on a bluff in Byram Park overlooking scenic Long Island Sound in one direction and the park’s ball field in the other direction.

“In 2005 Rotary International, a service organization now in over 160 countries around the world, celebrated its 100th anniversary. In honor of this milestone, each of the 30,000 plus clubs was asked to undertake the planning, financing and execution of a permanent project dedicated to the improvement of its local community. In cooperation with the town of Greenwich Parks and Recreation Department, the Greenwich Rotary club identified the need of a new picnic pavilion at Byram Park. The Greenwich Rotary Club turned to our former president and architect Chuck Hilton to produce a design for this "Greenwich Rotary Centennial Pavilion." The result was a beautiful new 1,000 sq. ft. pavilion anchored on a scenic bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. The pavilion has been well received by the town officials, the Dept. of Parks and Recreation staff, and park attendees, alike. Thanks to Chuck and his dedicated team for their leadership and time, the beautifully designed structure continues to be enjoyed by Greenwich residents. Chuck and his company is now committed to the designing of a 9/11 Memorial to be resurrected in the newly opened Cos Cob Park.”

— SALLY PARRIS, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE GREENWICH ROTARY CLUB
