I’m excited to introduce our new video series that we are calling ‘Craftsman Corner’, where we go off the boards to visit some of the most skilled craftsmen and innovative building material suppliers in the market today.

We’ll learn about the special products they are creating, and how they are made.

As architects and designers, our job is to understand our client’s needs and dreams, and then to create unique, highly personalized homes that will live well for them, and future generations.

While many of our projects are traditionally inspired, there are also many very modern materials, building systems, and fabrication techniques that go into today’s construction.

The suppliers, fabricators and craftsmen that build these amazing homes are critical partners in making these unique projects a reality.

In this series we will pull back the curtain to get a behind the scenes look at how some of these innovative and amazing components are made.

- Episode 1: Grothouse -

Our first video features luxury wood surfaces designer and manufacturer, Grothouse from Germansville, PA.

We were introduced to Grothouse in 2021 and were inspired by their commitment to creating the most innovative, luxurious and highly engineered countertops, floating shelves, butcher blocks, tables, and stair treads.

Their team operates out of a state-of-the-art facility in Pennsylvania where raw materials are turned into finished products and shipped around the world. Grothouse is the luxury wood surface of choice for the highest-end kitchen and bath designers, architects and homeowners.

- Episode 2: Interstate + Lakeland Lumber -

In our second video, we are meeting with a team from Interstate + Lakeland Lumber, headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut, to speak about the use and fabrication of solid cellular PVC for exterior trim. We are on the site of a Charles Hilton Architects-designed project in Larchmont, NY where we did an extensive renovation of the interior and a completely new exterior for this 6000 sq. ft. waterfront Mediterranean home.

Many of our projects are traditionally inspired and contain a great deal of exterior trim. This includes roof cornices (crowns, facias, soffits, etc.), window and door casings and trim, corner boards, water tables, railings, balusters, exterior brackets, shutters, columns and pilasters, porticos, porches, and much more. Historically, most exterior trim has been made from wood. However, cellular PVC is a very durable, recyclable, and cost-effective alternative to real wood. Unfortunately, not everyone understands how to properly fabricate and install cellular PVC. We think Interstate is among the absolute best at doing this, and this is why we’ve invited them to the site to talk about what they do so well.
